How to wash a skull cap without ruining it

A skull cap sits right against your head: it takes in sweat, hair products and city dust. Washed properly, it keeps its shape, its fit and a sharp logo for a long time. Washed badly, it stretches or fades. Here's the method, in five minutes of work.

How often should you wash your skull cap?

If you wear it every day, wash it every one to two weeks. If you wear it for sport or with styling products (oil, gel, shea butter), wash it more often: these products build up in the fibres and mark the fabric. Between washes, let it air out rather than leaving it rolled up at the bottom of a bag.

Hand washing

It's the gentlest way to keep your beanie's fitted shape.

  1. Turn it inside out to protect the logo.
  2. Fill a basin with cold water (30 °C max) and a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. Let it soak for ten minutes, then gently squeeze the fabric between your hands. Don't scrub hard and don't wring it.
  4. Rinse in cold water until there's no foam left.
  5. Remove water without wringing: roll it in a clean towel and press to soak up the excess.

Machine washing

No time for the basin? The machine works too, with a few precautions:

  • turn the skull cap inside out and put it in a laundry bag;
  • choose a cold delicate cycle (30 °C max) with a low spin;
  • wash it with similar colours, especially the Black and the Camo;
  • don't mix it with jeans or zipped clothes, which can snag it.

Drying: flat and in the open air

This is the step that makes the difference. No tumble dryer: heat stretches the fibres and can damage the logo. Turn your skull cap right side out, reshape it with your hands and let it dry flat, in the open air, away from radiators and direct sunlight. Polyester dries fast: a few hours is usually enough.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Hot water: it reduces elasticity and can make colours bleed.
  • Tumble dryers and radiators, for the same reason.
  • Bleach and harsh stain removers, which fade prints like the Leopard or the Thermal.
  • Ironing over the logo.
  • Hanging it wet from a peg: it stretches under its own weight.

FAQ

My skull cap has stretched a little, what can I do?

Hand wash it in cold water and let it dry flat while reshaping it: it usually gets its fit back. Just avoid pulling on it while it's wet.

How do I get rid of a smell without washing it?

Let it air out overnight near an open window. If the smell lingers, a quick cold hand wash solves it.

How should I store my skull caps?

Flat, or rolled without crushing them, in a drawer or a box. Avoid hanging them on a hook: it ends up marking and stretching the fabric.
